Dag 8 - Stare Miasto, Nowe Miasto

For my foreign friends, there' s an English version below. :) Please correct me if I say something wrong, because I really need to improve my writing.

Ja, Warschau dus. Gisteravond kwam ik iets na negen aan op het centraal station en werd ik opgehaald door mijn couchsurfinghost Kashenka. Ze is heel aardig en maakte vanochtend pannekoeken voor me als ontbijt. Ik heb nu voor 2 nachten een eigen kamer en dat is wel fijn na een week telkens in dezelfde ruimte als andere mensen te moeten slapen.

Vanochtend ben ik de stad in gegaan om, heel verrassend, de stad te bekijken. Eerst het oude gedeelte van de stad, ook hier de oude Joodse ghetto, wat me erg deed denken aan Kasimierz in Kraków, maar dan iets minder tof. Het oude gedeelte lijkt hier iets meer op toerisme gericht te zijn (alhoewel er niet bijzonder veel toeristen zijn), er zijn overal terrasjes met voornamelijk toeristen. Niet veel bijzonders gedaan verder, vooral foto's gemaakt.

Het oude gedeelte is niet heel groot, dus daarna naar het nieuwe, post-communistische gedeelte van de stad gelopen en daar alles bekeken. Het contrast tussen het oude en nieuwe gedeelte is best gek om te zien omdat er nauwelijks een echte overgang is. Veel immens grote gebouwen, veel beelden en ook wel vooral veel van het zelfde.

Een groot verschil ten op zichte van Kraków in het voordeel van Warszawa is wel dat de levensstandaard hier wel wat hoger lijkt te liggen. Daarbij wel gezegd dat ik hier wel voor het eerst mensen echt actief zag bedelen (op de grond met een bakje), maar volgens mij waren dat zigeuners.

Al met al vind ik de stad leuker dan ik verwacht had, maar dat moest ook wel aangezien de meeste mensen in Kraków niet al te positief waren over Warszawa. En dat snap ik ook wel, want ik mis de sfeer die in Kraków heerst toch wel.

Vanavond ga ik met mijn host en een vriendin van haar wat kroegen bekijken, dus ik ben benieuwd wat ik daar van vind. :)

So yes, Warsaw. Yesterday night I arrived a little after nine at the central station and I got picked up by my couchsurfing host Kashenka. She's really nice and she made me pancakes this morning for breakfast. I have my own room here for two nights which is pretty nice after a week of having to sleep in the same room as other people.

This morning I went into the city to, surprisingly enough, see the city. First the old part of town, the Jewish ghetto like in Kraków, which reminded me a lot of Kasimierz, but then not as nice. But still nice. :p The old part here seems to be a bit more focussed on tourisme (although there aren't really that much tourists), since there were terraces everywhere with especially tourists (and tourist prices). I didn't do anything special really, I mostly took some photos.

The old part isn't that big, so afterwards I went to the new, post-communistic part of the centre and walked around for a bit. The contrast between the old and the new part is kinda weird to see because there barely is a transition. There were a lot of huge buildings, a lot of statues and also a lot of the same stuff. To me, then.

A big difference between Kraków and Warszawa, in the favour of Warszawa, is that the livingstandard here seems to be a bit better. Though I'll have to add that it was here that I saw people ' actively' begging (on the ground with a cup), but I think they were gypsies.

All of these things considered I like the city better than expected, but that had to happen really since most people in Kraków weren't too positive about Warszawa. And I get that, because I do as well, miss the atmosphere Kraków has.

Tonight I'll go see some pubs together with Kashenka and a friend of hers, I'm curious what I'll think about that. :)
